Interior Alaska Enters Semifinalist Round of GUEP as ICEE Alaska
Working under the umbrella of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) several organizations in the Fairbanks/North Pole community have come together to form Interior Community Energy Efficiency (ICEE) Alaska in order to compete in the semifinalist round of the Georgetown University Energy Prize (GUEP) competition. To announce this undertaking a press event was held last Wednesday, January 14th at the FNSB Office. At the event members of the ICEE Alaska steering committee and GUEP Project Developer Christopher Nelson were on hand and teleconferenced in to speak to the media about the importance of the competition for areas like Interior Alaska.
Of the original 70 applicants to the competition, ICEE Alaska was selected to move on to the semifinalist round with 49 other communities. With the grand prize of $5 million the competition will last through mid-2017 requiring each participating community to implement their own energy saving plan for the next two years. At the conclusion of the competition each community will be scored on what they were able to accomplish.
